OT HIPPOTHERAPY ONLINE VOLUNTEER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Presenters: Remeshwar Narain, OTD, OTR/L

The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, 4th edition (OTPF) (AOTA, 2020), lists volunteer exploration and volunteer participation as relevant occupations that could have specific meaning and value to an individual. This suggests that online volunteer educational programs, such as the one described in this article, can improve volunteers’ understanding of OT hippotherapy and the clients they serve. Ultimately, this can increase volunteer participation and hippotherapy team interactions throughout treatment sessions secondary to increased knowledge and understanding of OT and OT hippotherapy services after participating in this program.

Evaluating the Effect of Equine Conformation on Core Muscle Activation for Use in Hippotherapy

Presenter: Vanessa Royal

Horses vary in their movement based on their confirmation and there is a lack of research into how the physical attributes of the horse affect muscle activation of riders. The purpose of this research is to evaluate how horses with different conformations influence the activation of core musculature, and to understand the most important factors that therapeutic riding centers and PTs consider when choosing horses to use in treatments.

ELECTRICAL STIMULATION IN COORDINATION WITH HIPPOTHERAPY

Presenter: Michelle Winer PT, MSPT, HPCS

Electrical stimulation is an underutilized modality in pediatrics and outpatient clinical settings. There are a number of barriers to use of electrical stimulation as well as a number of facilitators that can increase use. Research on functional electrical stimulation (FES) in CP shows that it can affect spasticity, strength, gait, posture, balance and upper extremity use. Use of FES can be a modality that works well with and complements the use of hippotherapy in clinical practice.

International Lunch & Learn: "Perspectives on Hippotherapy" for German Speakers

PresenterRuth Dismuke-Blakely, MS, CCC-SLP, HPCS, AHA, Inc. Faculty

 Moderator: Esther Nofziger, OT, HPCS

Please join us for a webinar discussing a medical model of incorporating hippotherapy into physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy services. In the United States, hippotherapy is regarded as a standard therapy practice tool for pediatric and adult populations with disabilities. The content is intended to promote understanding of how medical quality equine movement can be incorporated as a treatment tool into standard therapy services. Content will be presented in English with concurrent German translation.
